A família Emo mudou-se para Veneza em 997 de Vicenza. Seu nome era Aimus, posteriormente contratado pela Aimo e popularmente chamado Emo e, como tal, aceito no século XV também em documentos públicos. Uma família Aimus estava em Pádua na época de Augusto, e não há nada para impedir a tradição de que a família Aimus de Vicenza, rica em bens nas áreas de Pádua e Polenise, eram as mesmas que residiam em Pádua antes da destruição feita pelos hunos. No século XII, um Aimus chamado Anterpiano, conhecido como Rodigino, era um general imperial, enquanto Giovanni e Rigo apareceram em Veneza entre os nobres de Consiglio e Giorgio e Alvise eram capitães do exército veneziano.
