Antico ed assai nobile casato lombardo, con prima residenza nella città di Bergamo, i cui numerosi rami si son detti Bonassi, Bonasi Gobia, Bonasi, Bonazzi e, più anticamente, Bonaxis, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Nel bergamasco si hanno memorie di tal casato sin dal 1158 ma è nel 1450 che fu ammesso al Consiglio nobile di Bergamo. La famiglia ha diramato nella vicina Albino ma anche in Bari, ove parimenti fu annoverata tra le nobili. Si ritiene inoltre che essa abbia comunanza di sangue con l'antica casa Benazzi di Bologna, anch'essa di origine longobarda. Il reverendo P.F. Paolo Morgia, nella sua "Nobiltà di Milano divisa in sei libri", stampata in Milano nel 1595, dice dei Bonassi: "Tra questa famiglia la sua origine in Lombardia, non possono le lingue dolose criticare contro l'antichissima origine, e progressi di questa chiarissima famiglia.
