Cognome di origine Riojan. Viene dai signori di Biscaglia. Numerosi rami passarono in America. Si collegò con la prima nobiltà spagnola e dimostrò la sua nobiltà innumerevoli volte negli ordini militari e nei maestri di cavalleria reale. Don Diego de C. y Enriquez fu creato Duca di Maqueda nel 1530. Altri titoli di Conti ricadevano anche su signori di questo cognome e il titolo di Marchesi di C. de Montehermoso, fu assegnato a Don Agustín de C., un vicino di Cuba, nel 1711. Il capitano Don Miguel de C. Vélez de Guevara nacque a La Hubana il 29 settembre 1696 e testimoniò il 13 novembre 1771. Sua moglie era Doña María Luisa Castellón y Calvo, nata a L'Avana il 21 Giugno 1697, il cui matrimonio fu celebrato l'8 agosto 1721.
