Il Crollalanza scrive che Giustamente, nel 1089, era conte di Vimercate; Pinamonte nel 1163 era signore della Rocca di Agrucci; Ottavio nel 1080 Vescovo di Bergamo; Acherio condottiero dell' esercito milanese nel 1150; e Ballolo decurione di Milano nel 1380. Filippo Maria Visconti nel 1412 dichiarò nobile la famiglia Capitani di Vimercate. Gregorio Vescovo di Trebisonda nel 1461. Lo Spreti scrive che il capostipite sia un Pinamonte dei signori di Vimercate nel XII secolo. Un Guido, suo contemporaneo, fu podestà di Bologna e console di Milano. La famiglia fu dichiarata nobile nel 1412 dal duca Filippo Maria Visconti. La famiglia occupò importanti cariche pubbliche; Gaspare ebbe la contea di Valenza e di Vimercate dal duca Francesco I e fu sepolto in Milano nella chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie; un Giovanni Maria fondò in Osnago un'opera pia che ancora sussiste. Con Decreto Ministeriale 6 giugno 1900 furono riconosciuti nell'antica nobiltà
