Famille lombarde, de tradition ancienne et noble, qui s'est propagée au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie. L'origine de ce patronyme, antérieure au XVe siècle, remonte au toponyme Caspano (SO). On en trouve les premiers relevés dès 1500, avec un "Stefano fu Tognij Betoni de Caspano di Grosio", nommé dans un acte de vente d'un terrain et, en 1600, avec un Martino Caspanus, maire du district de Viale de Grosio (SO). Famille d'origine lombarde de la ville de Cáspano (SO) en Valteline, dont l'étymologie remonte au nom de personne romain Casperuis. L'une des familles les plus importantes portant ce nom de famille est la famille noble Caspani, appartenant au consortium des capitaines de Parravicino.
