Presero il nome dal castello di Motrone, castello del territorio lucchese, ebbero la cittadinanza di Lucca nel sec. XV, dando alla Repubblica Gonfalonieri ed Anziani nei secoli XVII e XVIII. Ebbero palazzo in Lucca, e sepolture nella chiesa di S. Frediano, e nel 1628 furono iscritti nel Libro d'oro. L'ultimo di questa famiglia, Sebastiano, adottò nel 1805 Giovan Battista. Questa famiglia, che traeva la sua origine da Fibbiano Montanino, ebbe personaggi eminenti: Giovanni, passato in Francia al seguito di Lodovico Gonzaga, duca di Nevers; Lorenzo, capitano dei cavalleggeri nelle guerre di Fiandra; Francesco, ingegnere idraulico al servizio di Luigi XIV. Nel secolo XVII il ramo di Giovan Battista A. risiedeva in Narbonne. Francesco, pretore di Cesena e governatore di Rimini e Faenza (1559-60) fu insigne giurista; Silvestro, nominato da Gregorio XV vescovo di Atri e Penne nel 1621, fu da Innocenzo X promosso alla sede di Parma nel
