On trouve le nom de cette maison diversement écrit Coutel ou Cottel. Haut bourgeoisie, connue au Puy en 1320, possédant fiefs et chapelle avec vicaire dans l'église de St-Paulien, par rémission du vicomte de Polignac (12 mars 1606). Anoblie au XVème siècle. Un chanoine de Notre-Dame du Puy (1321); un prieur de la commanderie de Bessamorel (1474). Catherine, fille unique de Pierre, seigneur de Glavenas, épousa le 28 sept. 1588 Claude de Pollalion, seigneur de Bouzols en Gèvaudan. Branche à St-Flour des seigneurs d'Ardanne et de la Mothe d'Argilly, d'où une lignée de magistrats et conseillers au parlement de Paris. La jonction de cette branche n'a pas pu être toutefois établie avec les Cottel de Glavenas.
