Famille ancienne et très noble de la République Sérénissime de Gênes, de vertu claire et ancestrale, qui s'est répandue, au fil des siècles, dans diverses régions d'Italie et du monde et, principalement, en Suisse, Cadix, Argentine et Uruguay. En raison de probables erreurs de transcription dans les registres, il est unanimement admis que les familles Delle Piane et Dellepiane sont en réalité une seule prosapia. Quoi qu'il en soit, ce patronyme dérive du nom médiéval "de Planis" et est lié au fait que les ancêtres étaient originaires des plaines de Gênes. Déjà au Xe troisième siècle, les membres de la maison apparaissent parmi les niveleurs libres, petits vassaux ruraux de l'archevêque de Gênes, à qui ils paient du terratico, et autour desquels ils gravitent, comme en témoigne la présence d'Oberto de Planis de Pulcifera, qui apparaît comme témoins dans les documents de la Curie en 1254, et de Fulco, témoins
