Segun el cronista Don Juan Baños de Velasco, este apellido es patronímico de Diego; y aun parece muy probable que Dia, Diaz y Diez derivan indistintamente de Diego y de Diago. A fines del siglo VIII, en tiempo del rey Mauregato, un hijo-dalgo del apellido D. se estableció en el reino de Leon, en el valle del Zurreño, donde fundó su casa solar, de la cual procede un noble linaje de este apellido, que como hemos visto en el número anterior, está entroncado con el de Ovejas. Por referencias de historiadores de la época y otras averiguadas por Araldis en los archivos registrales de ciudades y otros privados, podríamos afirmar, pero no asegurar, que este escudo u otro muy similar a él, apareció inicialmente desde el siglo XI al XIV, particularmente en la corte de artistas e iluminadores de libros que acompañaban siempre a Alfonso V, cuyos resultados se conservan hoy en la Universidad de Valencia. Todo ello parece coincidir con la memoria familiar de algunos de los miembros de la rama de la familia Diez.
