El primitivo solar de este apellido estuvo en la anteiglesia de Gámiz (cuyo nombre tomó), del partido judicial de Vitoria, en Álava. Ramas que pasaron a Guipúzcoa se establecieron en el Valle Real de Léniz. Posteriormente fundaron un nuevo solar en las llamadas Torres de Carranzo, a nueve leguas de la ciudad de Burgos, y siguiendo las incidencias de la reconquista, se establecieron en Andalucía. El primero que pasó a esta región se llamaba Mengo de G. y fué uno de los quinientos caballeros que por orden del Rey don Fernando III el Santo, acudieron en socorro de Baeza y ganaron su Alcázar, el 30 de Noviembre de 1227. Sus armas aparecían en el famoso arco de la iglesia de Santa María. De Baeza pasó esta familia a la ciudad de Jaén, donde fundó una casa de mucho lustre, y a las villas de Cambil, Alvánchez y Jimena.
