Il nome di questa famiglia viscontile, appare alla vita pubblica tortonese - e quasi certamente per la prima volta - dopo otto secoli e mezzo da tale avvenimento trascorsi in gran parte sotto la soggezione romana e longobarda. La costituzione del Comune Signorile di Tortona avvenuta nel 1122 ebbe i suoi oppositori tra i quali, e non ultimi, i visconti che reggevano le sorti della città, ufficio da cui furono esautorati. Si vuole tentassero riprendere le redini del governo - non ci è dato precisare se a nome del vescovo o dei Malaspina entrambi investiti dell'autorità comitale - ma, espulsi dovettero rifugiarsi nei loro castelli dai quali inviarono messi all'impertore Federico Barbarossa sollecitandolo affinchè provvedesse a sottomettere la città. E' probabile che i G., più concilianti, si siano astenuti da tale azione, perchè durante l'assedio posto nel 1155 dallo Svevo alla città ribelle essi abitavano in Tortona e le cronache
