The name 'Hamilton' originates from Scotland and Northern Island, It is a habitation name, ultimately not from the town of Hamilton near Glasgow (which is derived from the surname), but from what is now a deserted village in the parish of Barkby, Leicestershire,England. However some bearers may derive their name from the town founded by the Hamiltons, rather than from being members of the Norman family descending from Walter FitzGilbert de Hameldone, a Norman baron who gave support to Robert the Bruce in the 13th Century. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Hamilton' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 13th century were a 'William de Hameldene', from the County of Buckinghamshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Alexander Hamilton', of the Island of Arran. He emigrated with his wife and children to America in 1842, settling at French River, Prince Edward Island. Today, 'Hamilton' is the '92nd' most common surname in North America.
