The surname Holland can be of English, German, Flemish, Dutch or Jewish in origin. It is a regional name from Holland, a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the Netherlands. The name is derived from the Middle Low German composed of the elements 'hol', hollow, sunken and 'land', land. The name thus comes to signify 'hollow or depressed land'. However there is argument due to a ninth-century deed which shows that the wooded region around Dordrecht was called Holtland, from the Old Dutch 'holt', a wood. A name which seems to have spread to the surrounding country and to have been assimilated to 'Holland'. In England the name is derived from a habitational name from any of the eight places so called, from the Old English 'hoh', ridge and 'land', land. It thus comes to mean here 'land on a projecting ridge'. To the Norwegians it is a farm name signifieing 'rounded hill farm'. In Old Norway farms were large and important centers of family life, some running from seacoast to mountain top. Some farm names have been traced back to the Early Iron Age. The name dates back to the ninth century were a Begmundus de Holande is recorded in historical archives. The name was brought to America predominately by English immigrants. One of the first fore fathers to bring this name to America is that of a Thomas Holland, a ironmonger of London, who came to America aboard the Bland; he settled in Virginia. This name is the two hundredth and eleventh most common surname in America.
