Dato che è di origine religiosa, derivato dalla festa delle palme, nel periodo pasquale, potrebbero essersi formate diverse famiglie con questo antico cognome, non solo in Portogallo ma anche in Spagna, dove vi furono famiglie di grande antichità e nobiltà nel regione. In Portogallo, coloro che lo utilizzarono si distinsero in tempi diversi, avendo ricevuto dai nostri sovrani i più diversi favori reali come Fori, titoli o Lettere di Stemmi. La persona che più remotamente lo ricevette sembra essere stato nel 1649 Manuel Francisco Ramos, nato nella parrocchia di S.Miguel de Beire, nel Comune di Aguiar de Sousa, i cui antenati godevano però già di riconosciuta predominanza sociale e nobiltà infatti, figlio di Rodrigo Ramos da Silva, e nipote di Baltasar Ramos da Silva, Nobile della Casa Reale. Sarebbero discendenti di Martim Afonso Ramos, originario di quella parrocchia, il cui padre era stato consigliere della città di Porto nel 1365,
