Antiga e ilustre família veneziana, chamada Tessari de Benedetti ou Tessariis, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos por diversas regiões da Itália. A origem deste sobrenome, anterior ao século XVII, segundo muitos genealogistas, deveria ser buscada em um apelido, por sua vez, baseado na profissão de tessaro (tecelão), provavelmente exercida por um progenitor, de quem, infelizmente, o a ação malévola do tempo não nos transmitiu certas notícias. Esta casa, em todos os tempos, sempre se destacou pelas altas personalidades a que deu origem e, na pessoa de Giovanni, do saudoso Gregorio, obteve, em Fevereiro de 1803, o friso de nobreza, com a agregação ao nobre Concílio de Pádua.
