Sehr alte und edle schottische und englische Familie, von klarer und angestammter Tugend, die sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte weltweit verbreitet hat. Die alten Appellationen der heutigen Familie Thorburn oder Thurburn waren Thurbarne und Thurbrand. Diese Namen sind skandinavischen Ursprungs und laut der Etymologie der dänischen Sprache würde der erste „Kind von Thor“ bedeuten, von „Thor“ (dem Gott des Donners und des Wetters), ausgesprochen „Tor“ oder „Tur“ und "Barne" (Kind); während die zweite Silbe "Brand" (ein Schwert) in Thurbrand seine Bedeutung als "Schwert von Thor" definieren würde.
