The name 'Wyatt' originates from England. It is derived from the Medieval given name 'Wiot', 'Wyot', 'Gyot', which derives from the Old English personal name 'Wigheard', composed of the elements 'wig', meaning war and 'heard', meaning hardy, brave, strong. Under Norman influence it was also adopted as a diminutive of both 'Gut' and 'William'. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Wyatt' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 13th century were a 'Ayot uxor Wyot', from Salop, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. An English family called Wyatt was closely linked with the 'Boelyn' family and through them with King Henry VIII. 'Sir Henry Wyatt' was joint Constable of Norwich Castle with 'Thomas Boelyn', whose daughter 'Anne' was raised with 'Sir Henry's' son, 'Sir Thomas Wyatt', who's great grandson, 'Sir Francis Wyatt' became governor of Virginia. His wife's family had great influence with the London Virginia Company, and Wyatt was named the Company´s governor in 1621 and became the first Royal Governor in 1624. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'John Wyatt', from England. He immigrated to North America prior to 1638, and settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts. Today, 'Wyatt' is the '558th' most common surname in North America.
