The name 'Blackwell' originates from England. It is derived from the habitation name from any of the various places so called, for example in the counties of Yorkshire, Dumfries, and Strathclyde, so called from the Old English word 'bloec' meaning black, dark, and 'wudu' meaning wood. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Blackwell' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 13th century were a 'Margery de Blacwelle', from Cambridgeshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273.
