Very ancient and noble Scottish and English family, of clear and ancestral virtue, that has worldwide spread, over the centuries. The ancient appellations of the present family of Thorburn or Thurburn were Thurbarne and Thurbrand. These names are of Scandinavian source and,according to the etymology of the Danish language, the first would signify "child of Thor," from "Thor" (the god of thunder and the weather), pronounced "Tor" or "Tur" and "Barne" (child); whereas the second syllable "Brand" (a sword), in Thurbrand, would define its meaning as the "sword of Thor". The antiquity of the name must, therefore, date far back to a remote period in the history of the Norsemen. The first successful inroad of the Danes into England took place about the year A.D. 793. After the Norman conquest we find that many of the Danish colonies in England immigrated northwards and to the lowlands of Scotland. According to
