Famille possessionée en Gévaudan et au Puy. On trouve son nom diversement écrit Ayrault alias Eyraud ou Ayraud dits de Chanac (lat.: Ayraldus). Plusieurs branches de cette maison ont produit: Gabriel, était consul d'Ayraud en 1428; des chanoines de Notre-Dame du Puy (1380-1485); un célèbre abbé de la Chaise-Dieu, plus connu sous le nom d'André de Chanac (1378-1417), lequel fit construire une partie du cloître de cette abbaye où se voient, principalement aux clefs de voûte, ses armes sculptées. A la même famille semblent encore appartenir: autre Gabriel, juge de l'Equivalent, cité dans le compoix de 1544; Louis de Servissas, prévôt de l'église du Puy (1545), et, d'après Dom Estiennot: "Raymundus Ayraldi, e gente d'Ayrault ut opinor, natus" abbé du Monastier-St-Chaffre (1309-1320), oncle de Bompar abbé du même monastère (1419-1436). Il serait superflu de rappeler ici tout ce qui a été écrit sur le blason, sur la noblesse et sur l'origine du nom de cette famille. Nous ne saurions mieux faire que de vous indiquer l'introduction de Georges Paul en tête de son ouvrage "Armorial Général du Velay", qui a eu l'approbation de toutes les personnes compétentes en cette matière. La distinction familiale représentée ici sous forme de blason, survit à travers les siècles grâce à des précieux témoignages qui nous ont permis de rapporter les exploits et les gestes de cette noble famille. ...
