Cette maison illustre remonte à Bouchard, dit le Barbu, sire de Montmorency, qui accompagna le roi Robert à son expédition de Bourgogne en 1005; elle a donné cinq connétables, six maréchaux et trois amiraux de France; un connétable d'Angleterre et d'Hybernie: des grands chambellans, grands bouteillers ou échansons, grands panetiers et grands sénéchaux de France, etc.. La branche aînée déshéritée en 1465 s'est éteinte en 1570 dans les Pays-Bas en la personne du comte de Hornes, décapité par ordre du duc d'Albe. La branche de Fosseux alliée en Bretagne aux Avaugour, Rieux, Sérent et Charette, a produit François, abbé du Tronchet de 1628 à 1648; Henri-Mathieu, abbé de Geneston en 1694, mort en 1708 et s'est éteinte en 1862. La branche de Neuville, issue des sires d'Aumont par Georges, légitimé en 1576 et établi en Bretagne par son mariage en 1604 avec Gabrielle de la Roche Saint André, a produit un brigadier d'infanterie en 1719, s'est allié aux du Pas, Guillaudeuc et Cornulier et s'est fondue dans les Sénéchal de Carcado en 1750. La branche de Bouteville dont sont issus les ducs de Piney-Luxembourg et de Beaufort a été possessionnée en Bretagne par alliance avec les Montdragon, héritiers des la Palue, les Rosmadec et les du Harlay, héritiers des du Louët. La branche de Damville qui possédait depuis 1543 les baronnies de Châteaubriant et de Derval, recueillit la succession de la branche aînée. Ce fut en sa faveur que la baronnie de Montmorency fut érigée en duché-pairie en 1551; cette branche a fini à Henri, duc de Montmorency, amiral et maréchal de France, décapité en 1632, dont les biens furent dévolus à sa sœur Charlotte-Marguerite, mariée à Henri de Bourbon-Condé, pour lesquels la baronnie de Montmorency fut de nouveau érigée en duché-pairie l'an 1633. La branche de Laval, avait pour auteur Guy, époux de Philippette, baronne de Vitré, et fils puîné de Mathieu, connétable de France, marié en 1221 à Emme, baronne de Laval Cette branche avait quitté le nom de famille pour prendre celui de Laval, en conservant les armes de famille. ...
