Este antiguo y noble apellido tiene sus orígenes en el idioma inglés medieval y el francés antiguo. Etimológicamente está relacionado con el nombre común de una persona que proviene del latín Augustinus (derivación de Augusto, también Agosti). Fue un nombre muy popular en toda la Europa occidental durante la Edad Media debido a que muchos creyentes lo tomaron de San Agustín de Hippo (354 - 430), cuya influencia en el Cristianismo se compara a aquella de San Pablo. También ésta familia tuvo una rama que asentó sus raíces en Alemania siendo representada por personalidades muy ilustres en los años 1200 y 1400. Muchas órdenes religiosas se formaron con las reglas conocidas como los Canones de San Agustín que se establecieron en el siglo XI y la Orden de los Agustinos, una orden cuyos votos de pobreza eran muy austeros y que se fundó en el siglo XIII. En Inglaterra aumentó aún más la popularidad de este apellido por que lo llevaba por nombre San Agustín de Canterbury ( muerto en 605), un moje benedictino conocido como "El Apóstol de los Ingleses" y quien introdujo el Cristianismo en Inglaterra en 597 y fundó la orden en Canterbuy. Este apellido para llegar a su forma actual (Austin) pasó por diversas variaciones, de pronunciación y escritura dependiendo en gran parte de la región donde se estableciera: en inglés: Austen, Auston; francés: Augustin, Gustin; italiano: Agostini; en España: Agustín; Catalán: Agustí; Portugués: Agostinho; Inglaterra: Austins, Austin; Alemán: Augstein, Auxten; Flamenco (Hol.): Austen, Ostin. Fueron muchas las personalidades ilustres que portaron el apellido Austin, entre ellos están la novelista Jane Austin, (1775-1817) hija de un Clérigo que provenía de una rama de la familia en Kent cuyos ancestros eran miembros de la Industria textil. Este apellido, ya como tal, es antiguo y data desde el siglo XII cuando encontramos a un Austinus de Bernardeston en archivos históricos.
