Ignora-se a origem desta família, parecendo derivar o apelido de algum dos lugares que têm por nome B.. É anterior a 1509 porque o Livro do Armeiro-mor, terminado no referido ano, desceve as suas armas. D. João Ribeiro Gaio, bispo de Malçaca, nos versos feitos aos Barbudos incluiu no título os Barbedos, o que mostra supor que tinham a mesma origem. Não parece que assim seja, existindo sòmente analogia de palavras. Dos viscondes de Rendufe: família descendente, por varonia, de João de B. Vieira, o velho, e de sua 2ª mulher D. Catarina de Macedo, mor.es em Resende na 1ª metade do séc. XVII, e que os Nobiliários dizem ser neto p. de João B. de Melo, fidalgo da C. R. e 5º sr. do morgado de Velude, em Sinfães (instituído por Martim Vasques de Matos, que fez testamento em 1412) e da casa do Ribeiro, em Resende, e de sua 2ª mulher D. Bárbara Cardoso, da casa e honra de Cardoso. De João de B. Vieira e de sua mulher foi neto Manuel de Sequeira B., que c. com D. Maria-Caetana Pinto Cortês, sr.ª da casa de Rendufe, em Resende, sendo os 3º avós de Manuel Cardoso de Sequeira B., 1º visconde de Rendufe (dec. de 29.1 e carta de12.2.1880), adm. do concelho de Resende e sr. da casa de Rendufe, que n. em Resende a 25.9.1844 e f. no Rio de Janeiro a 2.7.1888. O 1º visconde de Rendufe casou com D. Antónia-Adelaide de Vasconcelos Pereira de Melo, sr.ª da casa de S. Bento, em St.ª Cristina de Figueiró, Amarante (irmã de D. António-da Trindade de Vasconcelos Pereira de Melo). ...
