The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but data extracted from Historical archive's confirm that one of the first foremothers to bring this name to America was a certain 'Anne Bragg', from Whitehaven, England. She emigrated to North America in 1774, aged twenty, sailing from the Port of Whitehaven aboard the ship named the 'Norfolk' on the seventeenth of May, arriving in Virginia, on the twenty-fourth of the same. The English scientist 'Sir William Bragg' (1862-1942) and his son, 'Sir Lawrence Bragg' (1890-1971), who shared the Nobel prize for physics in 1915, came from a Cumbrian family near Wigton, whose members had been farmers and seamen for generations.
