It is derived from the Middle English 'cha(u)ndeler', the Old French being 'chandelier', the Late Latin 'candelarius', a derivative of 'candela', candle, from 'candere', to be bright. While a medieval chandler no doubt made and sold other articles beside candles, the extended sense of the modern English 'chandler' does not occur until the sixeteenth century. The name may also , more rarely, have denoted someone who was responsible for the lighting arrangements in a large house, or else one who owed rent in the form of wax or candles. The name dates back to the twelfth century were a Mathew le Candeler is recorded in historical archives; both Chandler and Candler are used of the same man in 1756 and 1759 in England. The name was brought to America by English immigrants. One of the first fore fathers to bring this name to America is that of a John Chandler, a watch maker formerly of London, who emigrated to America aboard the Adventure; he settled in Maryland.
