Ignora-se a origem de família dos Coimbras, mas não oferece dúvida que o apelido foi tomado da cidade dos seu nome. O ramo mais importante desta linhagem, se houve só uma, foi o de Braga. O Dr. João de C., morador na freguesia de S. Vicente de Fora, de Lisboa, por cima do Marco Salgado, passou a Braga, no tempo do arcebispo desta cidade, D. Diogo de Sousa, e na sua sé foi cónego e provisor, tendo as abadias de Soutelo, Barbude, S. João do Souto, na referida cidade, e outras. Fez a capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição a 16-II-1530, vinculhado-lhe importante quantia de dinheiro, para o que alcançou breve do Papa Clemente III e licença do arcebispo. Deixou o Dr. João de C. filhos que continuaram a geração, transmitindo o apelido a seus descendentes. D. Diogo Dias, casado com D. Examea Peres, teve un filho por nome D. Vicente Dias de C., sobrejuiz no ano de 1249, muito rico e honrado, que se recebeu com D. Boa Peres, de quem teve D. Godinho de C. e outros. Não se sabe se destes provirão os Coimbras que floresceram no século XVII e seguintes, mas sabe-se que o apelido também existia em tempo dos Reis D. Pedro e D. Fernando, em cujos reinados viveu um João de C., pai de Afonso Anes de C. e de Martim Anes de C., este, pai de Lopo Martins de C., havido em Clara Vasques, mulher solteira, e legitimado por Carta de D. João I, passada em 15-IV-1427. Afonso Anes de C. teve, para sempre, por Carta de D. Duarte, de 31-XII-1436, umas casas de foro, em Évora, onde morava. ...
