Esta ilustrísima casa tuvo su antiguo solar en Santiago de Galicia, precisamente en el terreno donde en nuestros dias se ha fundado el seminario conciliar. Tomó su apellido de la villa de D., situada en la misma provincia de Santiago; y los obispos de Orense Don Servando y Don Pedro Seguino afirman que procede de Severino, conde de Galica, caudillo godo del tiempo del rey Egica, señor de la tierra de D. En el siglo XII Doña Señorina Suarez D., hija de Suero Osorez D., casó con Pedro Arias de Saavedra, rico-hombre muy poderoso en Galicia y favorecido del rey Don Alfonso VII, por haber sido la causa principal de que tomase posesion de su reino en Ilio y se coronase, como dice Zurita. La familia D. es célebre desde los tiempos mas remotos por los muchos y señalados servicios que prestaron sus individuos a los reyes de Castilla y de León en las guerras contra los moros; y en tiempos posteriores ha producido tambien varones muy señalados en todos conceptos. La ciudad de Lérida fué defendida por el portugués Pedro D. contra el rey de Aragón Don Juan II, y por el condestable de Portugal en 1464. Alfonso D. fué uno de los valerosos caballeros que se hallaron en el paso que sostuvo Suero de Quiñones en el puente de Orbigo, en 1434. De Galicia salieron algunas ramas de esta familia para establecerse en otras partes. Con motivo de la muerte del arzobispo de Santiago dejaron esta ciudad, y despues de haberse refugiado al palacio que tenian en Pontevedra, se establecieron en Portugal. Otra casa muy antigua.
