Conosciuta come Gortani o Gortana, questa famiglia vanta origini longobarde e risulta presente in Cividale del Friuli, nell'antichità capoluogo del ducato longobardo del Friuli, sin almeno dal XIII secolo. Un Leonardo, del fu Candido, sindaco di Paularo nel 1502 ma originario di Clavais, fu il capostipite della famiglia di Paularo da cui poi discese quella di Malborghetto; un Nicolò, domiciliato in Arta nel 1541, fu invece il capostipite dei Gortani di Cabia.
