It thus comes to mean here 'land on a projecting ridge'. To the Norwegians it is a farm name signifieing 'rounded hill farm'. In Old Norway farms were large and important centers of family life,some running from seacoast to mountain top. Some farm names have been traced back to the Early Iron Age.
