It also a topographic name for someone that lived near an enclosure, a place that could be locked, form the Middle English word 'loke', Old English word 'loca' (a derivative of 'loc'). The Middle English word 'loke' was also used especially of a barrier on a river, which could be opened and closed at will, and by extension of a bridge. The surname may thus have also have been a metonymic occupational name for a lock-keeper. It is also an English and German nickname for a person with fine hair, from the Old English word, and old High German word 'loc' meaning lock (of hair), curl (probably also ultimately identical with the Old English word 'loc'). Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Locke' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the 13th century were a 'Geoffrey Lock', from Suffolk, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'William Locke', believed to be the founder of this family in America. 'William Locke', emigrated at the early age of six , apparently under the guardianship of 'Nicholas Davies'. He settled in Woburn, Massachusetts, dying on the sixteenth of June 1720, leaving issue one son 'James Locke', born on the seventeenth of November 1677.
