Aparece muy confuso el origen de este apellido, por la mucha antigüedad que le atribuyen los genealogistas. Varios de éstos dicen que procede de don Bocalla, famoso caballero del tiempo del Rey de Aragón don Sancho Ramírez, el cual, a las órdenes de este Monarca, conquistó la villa de Luna, que hoy pertenece al partido judicial de Egea de los Caballeros (Zaragoza), y en ella quedó como Conde o Gobernador, por lo cual tomó el apellido de L. Añaden que tuvo tres hijos, llamados: Lope Ferrench de L., del que descendieron los Señores y Condes de Luna. Pero la genealogía de los L. que poseyeron este Condado hasta que pasó a la Corona de Aragón (que lo cedió a Juan de Aragón, hijo natural de Alonso de Aragón, Conde de Ribagorza), aparece con tales saltos y tiene tantas lagunas, que no nos decidimos a reproducirla; Martín de L., progenitor de la rama de los Martínez de L., Condes de Morata; y Lope de L., de quien proceden los López de L., Martín de L. (hijo segundo de don Bocalla de L., antes citado), fué padre de Lope Martínez de L., que según algunos autores murió en el encuentro contra los navarros en Jaca. Procreó a Pedro Martínez de L., a quien algunos cronistas colocan entre los decapitados en la Campanta de Huesca.
