Il conte Francesco di Manzano nei suoi "Annali del Friuli" (Udine, 1858-68) accenna ad una antica tradizione, secondo la quale la sua famiglia sarebbe discesa dai conti Ilminghi, consanguinei dei conti di Wittelsbach, duchi, poi re di Baviera, oppure dagli Ilsunghi, conti di Moringen e Hohenrieden.
