Antiquíssima família irlandesa, que se diz provir de Olegário, primeiro Rei cristão da Irlanda em 432, cujos descendentes governaram até o século XIII na qualidade de Reis, continuando-se depois por linha de Príncipes soberanos até 1616. Tiveram os títulos de Condes de Tyrone e de Barões de Dungannon, por decreto de Henrique VIII, Rei de Inglaterra, em 1542. Devido à perseguição fieta aos católicos na Irlanda, no século XVII, esta casa dividiu-se em quatro ramos: o dos Príncipes de Tyrone, que emigrou para a Martinica; o dos Príncipes de Tyrone e Clanebay, que se estabelceu em França e daí veio para Portugal; o de Fews, que foi para Espanha; o os dos O'Neill, lordes de Shanes-Castle, que permaneceu na Irlanda e se encontra extinto. Os Príncipes de Tyrone e Clanebay foram ascendentes de Félix O'Neill, chefe da linhagem, que no começo de século XVIII ficou desapossado de todos os bens pela confiscação aplicada aos católicos da Irlanda, o que o levou a emigrar para França, Morreu em 1709, na batalha de Malplaquet, na Bélgica, onde entrara como oficial da brigada inglesa.
