Noble familia ya enlazada en mediados del siglo XVI con las de Zúñiga, Lara, Contreras y otras muy principales. Parece ser que su origen era aragonés. Una de sus ramas tuvo casa y residió en la villa de Chinchón (Madrid) y de ella fué Alonso S., que casó con doña Beatriz de Zúñiga y procrearon a Juan S. de Zúñiga y al Comendador Hernando S. de Zúñiga, fundador de un mayorazgo en el año 1573. El primero, Juan S. de Zúñiga, casó en Chinchón con doña Elena de Lara (hija mayor de Antonio Ortega de Lara y de doña Catalina de Contreras), naciendo de ese enlace dos varones y una hembra que se apellidaron de Zúñiga y Lara. El primogénito, Alonso de Zúñiga y Lara, sucedió a su padre en el señorío de la villa de Hortizuela (Cuenca) y en el mayorazgo que había fundado su abuelo, Alonso S., en la villa de San Pablo de la Moraleja (Valladolid), acrecentado luego con el que fundó, en 1573, el Comendador Hernando de Zúñiga, su tío, hermano de su padre. Falleció don Alonso, en Chinchón, el 26 de Junio de 1621. Había casado con doña Jerónima de Contreras y Arteaga, hija del Licenciado Jerónimo Contreras y de doña Juana de Arteaga, Señora de la Torre de Zurbarán, en Bilbao, y nieta de Fernán Gonzáles de Contreras, Oidor de la Real Chancillería de Valladolid y Señor de la casa de los Contreras en el barrio de San Juan, de Segovia, y de doña María de la Hoz y Morales. Los esposos don Alonso y doña Jerónima tuvieron varios hijos que usaron los apellidos Zúñiga, Contreras, Lara y Arteaga. ...
