Le origini di questa famiglia sono antichissime, anche se non si volesse accettare l'incerto capostipite Lanterio che fu marchese dell'Istria e che nel 932 fu in guerra coi Veneziani condotti dal doge Pietro II Candiani. Sin dal secolo XII° appaiono sicuramente accampati sulla sponda sinistra dell'Oglio, signori di quel paese ove l'Imperatore raccoglieva i tributi; infatti noi troviamo nel 1192 un Ottone e nel 1234 Guglielmo suo figlio governatori del ponte di Rudiano sull'Oglio, punto strategico importante per la guerriglia contro bergamaschi e cremonesi. Nel 1276 un Lanterio fu Podestà di Piacenza; suo figlio pure Lanterio nel 1301 venne ammesso alla cittadinanza di Bergamo e suo fratello Corrado morì combattendo in Africa sotto Tunisi. Nel 1329 un Gherardo fu Podestà della Mirandola.
